Some of the championship winning S&D B squad members
On Monday 12th September 20 members of the B squad turned up for an end of season rollup, team meeting and meal.
The evening started with 12 players having an hours rollup in the gusty but dry conditions. There was a great atmosphere on the green amongst these players whilst enjoying an hour or so of 2 bowl triples.
Afterwards we were joined by the remaining players in the committee where Dan kicked off proceedings with a review of the summers’ very successful S&D campaign. Dan thanked everyone for their efforts especially as it is believed that this is the first year ever that Westlecot has won division one. Long overdue. (EDIT – after collecting the league trophy at the S&D Presentation evening it transpires that Westlecot have actually won the league before – but only once before in 1971 – if anyone remembers this fine occasion (!) please can they contact Dan Bluett)
Dan then ran through various stats from the season – unlike in past seasons when we’ve had 1 or 2 players that had played every single game, this year there were none! Rod Holborow managed 21/22 and 2 others managed 20 games. Over the season there were 19 players that played over half the games and in total 32 players represented the team.
Dan then went on to thank his selection team of Denis Holborow and Mike Titcombe snr and presented them with comfitpro bowls cloths.
Wrapping up the years review Dan then highlighted the following 3 bowlers and also presented them with comfitpro cloths:
Mike Bowden – overall highest net shots – 198
Matt Webster – highest win percentage (min 5 games) – 88%
Rod Holborow – team managers’ player of the year. (Rod also came runner up in both above categories!!! He is also this years Wiltshire County Unbadged Champion – very well done Rod!)
Next we held elections for next years team manager and selectors. Dan is stepping aside as team manager as he wants to dedicate some more time to his umpiring activities. So, there were 2 nominations for Team Manager: Matt Webster and Mike Titcombe (jnr). Vote papers were distributed amongst those present and Matt Webster was duly elected. There were then 4 nominations for 2 selectors’ positions: Mike Titcombe (jnr), Dan Bluett, John Thomas & Mike Bowden. Once again vote papers were distributed and John Thomas and Dan Bluett were elected as selectors.
As outgoing team manager Dan wishes Matt all the best for next year and hopes that all players can give Matt as much support as Dan has had this year.
Official proceedings completed we de-camped to the bar for a few drinks and a lovely cottage pie (which was fantastic and we’d like to thank the caterers for all they’ve done for us this year).

Congratulations to Graham Hatherall on winning the champion of champions and also to Paul, Rod, Denis & Ian on winning the fours.
All of the various S&D mens’ comps are now at their Final stages, so here is a brief run down of who is still in each competition. The finals take place at Supermarine Bowls Club on Saturday 10th September:-
Champ of Champs – Graham Hatherall plays Trevor Herman (Garrards) – start time 2pm
Pairs – John Thomas & Dave Matthews play Richard Buckland and Andy Crump (W/B) – start time 10am
Rinks – Paul Kistle, Rod Holborow, Dennis Holborow and Ian Jefferies play Derek Watson, Bernard Sawyer, Alan Brewer and Roger Wood (W/E) – start time 10am
If you can I’m sure they’d all love a bit of support!!!
Thursday 25th – Town Gardens – Home – 12pts-2pts -81-61½ shots
Having already confirmed our status as Division 1 champions with last weeks result this was an opportunity to just relax and enjoy a good game of bowls with some excellent company from our closest neighbours, Town Gardens. Quite a number of players were once again unable to make this game due to commitments elsewhere (Worthing!!) but we still managed to put out a strong side capable of winning. And they duly did so. We won 3 rinks and the match overall.
So, at the end of a hard and gruelling season we’ve played 22, won 16, lost 6 – we have 206 points. And we are Division 1 champions (did I mention that already? Sorry!)
We will be arranging a team celebration evening for Monday 12th September where we will also elect our team manager and selectors for the 2012 campaign.
Finally, I’d just like to thank absolutely everyone in the squad that has helped us in this great achievement (one which we think we’ve never done before – “really?” I hear you say!!!)

To celebrate our great achievement (Div 1 Champions) I cordially invite all members of the Men’s S&D B squad to a roll-up and meal at the club.
At the same time we’ll have a quick end of year meeting to acknowledge some individual performances and to also elect a new team manager and selectors for next year.
A notice will be placed on the board asking you to indicate if you are coming so that the caterers know how many to cook for. I’m hoping that some funds will be made available from the Men’s section coffers for this too.
